Cambridgeshire County Council wants to ban non-electric buses from using the county’s bus lanes as part of plans to improve air quality.
“As the Conservative administration at the county council, we intend to increase pressure on bus companies to swap to electric vehicles, by drawing up plans and consulting on denying them access to bus lanes, with an aspiration to implement the new system from the end of 2021, unless they are fully electric,” says a new air quality policy document.
Cambridgeshire also plans to lobby East of England traffic commissioner Richard Turfitt to introduce a licence condition allowing only electric buses to operate within Cambridge city.
In addition, the council wants to open up bus lanes to all electric vehicles.
LTT approached Stagecoach, the major operator in Cambridge, for comment but had not heard back by close of press.
