Transport for the North has written to transport secretary Grant Shapps urging the Government to commit to a Thameslink-style investment to ease rail congestion on the through lines at Manchester Piccadilly. One of TfN’s proposals is to eliminate freight trains from the corridor. 

The Castlefield corridor is a major bottleneck for trains in Greater Manchester and the congestion can have a ripple effect across the north of England.
