‘Floating bus stops' (or ‘bus stop bypasses’) aim to enhance cyclists’ safety by avoiding the need for potentially dangerous overtaking manoeuvres at bus stops. However, the need for bus passengers to cross a cycleway when they board, or alight from, a bus has caused controversy in Edinburgh since the first such bus stops were introduced in 2016 on Leith Walk.
