The rail industry is to explore the practicality of a charging scheme to encourage train operators to reduce diesel emissions.
Industry body the RSSB is commissioning research to “assess the feasibility, and potential criteria and mechanisms of an [emissions] incentivisation scheme for rail”. The idea may be most appropriate for the country’s major metropolitan areas, it says.
