Palmer’s CAM plan is too high risk, says Lib Dem challenger for mayor

Cambridgeshire: Conservative James Palmer is seeking a second term as elected mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. Palmer won 38 per cent of first round votes in 2017, with the Liberal Democrats coming second with 23.5 per cent and Labour third with 18.6 per cent. Elections are also being held for Cambridgeshire County Council, and the city and district councils. The Conservatives have 34 of the 60 seats on the county council, with the Liberal Democrats second on 16.

The progression of the Cambridgeshire Autonomous Metro (CAM) project depends on James Palmer being re-elected mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority on 6 May. 

CAM is central to Conservative Palmer’s transport strategy. But his likely nearest rival, the Liberal Democrat candidate Aidan Van de Weyer, thinks the project is too high risk.
