CPS probes causes of smart motorway deaths

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is still not in a position to consider charging Highways England with corporate manslaughter over smart motorway deaths, having not yet received the required evidence from police.

In February, a coroner referred the death of Nargis Begum to the CPS. Begum, aged 62, died on a smart motorway section of the M1 in South Yorkshire in 2018 after her car broke down. Authorities should respond within 56 days to referrals by coroners, but the CPS told LTT last week...
