Publication celebrates life of lauded transport academic Richard Allsop

31 October 2024

The many accomplishments of highly regarded transport academic Richard Allsop are celebrated in a new publication.

Allsop, who passed away in January, was a professor at University College London for almost 50 years. He had extensive experience of research, training and advisory work on road safety, traffic management and other aspects of transport policy.

He was an Emeritus Professor of Transport Studies at UCL, where he played a senior role in transport research and teaching between 1976 and 2005. More recently, he had continued to contribute to research, advisory work and professional development in transport.

The 60-page book features many glowing tributes from some of those Richard Allsop inspired and supported. Contributors include: Margaret Bell, Professor of Transport and the Environment University of Newcastle upon Tyne; Glenn Lyons, Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility University of the West of England; David Davies, former Executive Director at PACTS (Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transport Safety); Nicola Christie, Professor of Transport Safety UCL; and David Banister Emeritus Professor of Transport Studies University of Oxford. Allsop's influence spread far and wide, as made apparent by the large number of contributors from around the world.

Indeed, a recent event hosted by UCL to celebrate Allsop's life was attended by more than 80 people including guests from Australia, Portugal, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.

More than 30 people also joined on-line from Australia, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Canada and the USA.

Richard Allsop's life and career are now celebrated in a new book, complied and edited by Emeritus Professor of Transport Studies at UCL Benjamin Heydecker, and designed and produced by Landor LINKS.
