DfT and Defra have approved Greater Manchester's £86m scheme to improve air quality instead of its original Clean Air Zone (CAZ) proposal, which would have involved charging motorists.

The departments have concluded that the scheme will meet legal obligations to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels without the need to charge the drivers of the most polluting vehicles.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said the region is set to benefit from 117 new lower and zero-emission buses.
