The UK’s longest direct train journey, which connects Aberdeen and Penzance, is to cease operation next month. The route’s operator CrossCountry has scrapped the continuous link between Scotland and the Cornish coast as part of twice-yearly timetable reviews.

Currently the 785-mile takes around 13 hours, stopping at 35 stations. But from 18 May it will be replaced by a new service, with an 11-hour and 30-minute journey from Aberdeen as far south as Plymouth, which will connect...
