Virgin Trains has claimed the cheapest cheapest long-distance rail fares in the UK, when its Megatrain joins the its routes linking Edinburgh and Glasgow with Birmingham, from July 14.
With an average cost of a penny for about two miles, the lowest cost for the single journey of almost 300 miles will be a mere £1, plus a fee of 50p per booking (but not per person).
