Providing more cycle lanes is not in the best interest of cyclists

The controversy over cycle lane research (‘Cycle groups clash over media portrayal of cycle lane research’ LTT 25 Sep) highlights the important question of how best to accommodate both new and existing cyclists on the roads. If a measure benefits one user but disbenefits another that is not helpful and if existing cyclists – who are clearly in the majority – are disadvantaged, then the result is a less acceptable cycling environment overall.
