Adonis lays the foundations for a high-speed rail revolution

Transport secretary Lord Adonis last week pledged the Government’s support for a 335-mile, multi-billion pound high-speed rail network linking London with Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

Train travel at speeds of 225mph between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds could become the norm if the Government’s plans published last week for a high-speed rail network can be turned into reality.

It won’t happen overnight: ministers envisage construction of the network beginning only after the completion of Crossrail in 2017. The first section of line from London to Birmingham would open in 2026 with extensions to Manchester and Leeds following in subsequent years. ...
