Former rail regulator Tom Winsor managed to bemuse the Today programme’s James Naughtie during a recent interview for the Radio 4 favourite. Winsor was invited onto the show to discuss the parallels between the current predicament oil giant BP finds itself in and Railtrack.
Fairly straight forward then? Well not according to Private Eye. Whenever Naughtie questioned Winsor he held up a series of flash cards in front of the baffled presenter. One read ‘Don’t rush me, I’m almost finished’; another ‘Interrupting me won’t get you anywhere’. However, the lawyer was only just starting. Gradually working his way through the set of cards he continued with ‘You don’t really expect me to answer that?’; ‘I got up at 0530 for this?’; “I’ve had enough of this, I’m off’; before ending with ‘I have suddenly lost the power of speech - carry on without me’.
The interview concluded, Winsor left the studio, leaving his flash cards behind. The Eye reports Winsor made the cards for a joke and that they are now stuck on the show’s studio wall. Sadly Naughtie didn’t see the funny side sadly apparently...
