Rise in car-free inner London households bucks national trend

The number of vehicles available to households in England and Wales increased by 14% from 23.9 to 27.3 million, between 2001 and 2011, according to data from the 2011 census.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that there was a 3.4 million increase in cars/vans available in England and Wales over the last decade. This broadly mirrors the increase in population over the same period from 52.4 million in 2001 to 56.1 million in 2011.
