Bus operator Stagecoach has claimed that a proposed quality contract for Tyne and Wear would expose local taxpayers to unacceptable financial risk.
Stagecoach told The Journal in Newcastle that recent analysis by transport consultant Chris Cheek shows the many risks of services being council-controlled, meaning "a ticking financial timebomb" for council taxpayers.
