Colchester Borough Council is offering Apple Pay at its St Mary`s car park

Colchester Borough Council is enabling motorists to pay for parking using the Apple Pay contactless service. The council has worked with parking terminal manufacturer Cale, which is offering secure contactless card readers that accept Apple Pay for its Cale WebTerminal (CWT) pay stations.

The CWT-C model allows Apple Pay users to pay for parking using the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or Apple Watch. 

Four new Cale CWT-C machines have initially been installed in the council’s St Mary’s car park. The Essex council plans to upgrade 16 existing Cole machines with the new contactless technology.

The CWT-C function is available as a new machine or as an upgrade of older products such as the MP102 or MP104. The Apple Pay feature works with the contactless credit/debit card reader. 

Operators that already have CWT-C machines with contactless credit/debit card readers will be able to accept payments using Apple Pay devices. Customers who have Cale machines without contactless credit/debit card readers need a hardware upgrade.

Trevor Degville is parking technical manager with North Essex Parking Partnership (NEPP), which runs parking in Colchester. He said: “We are extremely pleased with this solution. Public popularity with the service is growing and the contactless payments are quick and easy to use.

“Society is becoming increasingly digitised, and also car drivers get used to being able to benefit from the advantages of new technology increasing demands of our customers.”

Cale Briparc first deployed parking terminals that accepted EMV chip & PIN transactions in the UK in 2007.
