New station costs on Newcastle-Carlisle line too high, admits Network Rail

Network Rail has accepted that a £28.6m cost estimate for re-opening a station on the Newcastle-Carlisle line is likely to be an over-estimate, says Northumberland County Council. 

Gilsland station, between Haltwhistle and Brampton, closed in 1967. There is local support for it to re-open, serving as a gateway to Hadrian’s Wall. 

The £28.6m cost (Q2 2016 prices) estimate featured in a 2016 pre-GRIP (Governance for Railway Investment Projects) feasibility study....
