CurbIQ: The future of Traffic Orders

Digital solutions and innovative projects from Arcadis

As the UK advances toward a more sustainable, safe, and accessible transportation future, the adoption of digital solutions for traffic order management becomes increasingly vital.

The kerbside is evolving into a dynamic space that must accommodate the growing demands of various stakeholders – such as loading vehicles, EV charging stations, new mobility services, car share companies, or future autonomous vehicles. To ensure these diverse needs can coexist, a unified, accessible, and digital source of truth is crucial.

Digital traffic order management solutions, such as CurbIQ, not only simplify the complex governmental processes required to update and maintain road and kerbside policies but also enable cities to adapt to the demands of modern urban environments.

Traffic Regulation Orders in the Digital Age

Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) are essential tools for local authorities to manage road traffic and ensure safety. Traditionally, the process of creating and managing these orders has been cumbersome, complicated by the absence of a central database, which leads to conflicting or outdated information across different government teams.

Each year, local authorities issue thousands of TRO updates and temporary policies. However, many of these are not effectively communicated to the public or relevant stakeholders, and some are inadequately documented or consolidated within the authorities themselves. However, the rise of digital technologies, driven by the need to comply with new TRO digitisation legislation under the Automated Vehicles Act, has transformed this process, making it more efficient and accessible.

CurbIQ’s Digital Traffic Regulation Order (D-TRO) platform provides an integrated solution that simplifies the management, communication, and enforcement of road and kerbside policies.

CurbIQ helps local authorities digitise their TROs into the Department for Transport's (DfT) specified formal, enabling the mandatory communication of D-TRO with nationwide databases like the National Parking Platform (NPP). It also simplifies the design, proposal, and issuance of TRO updates, coordinating efforts across road maintenance, event organisation, parking enforcement, and street redevelopment teams through the adoption of a centralised platform. By keeping a digital archive of TROs, CurbIQ also allows cities to track the evolution of road and kerb space, compare it with future plans, and monitor progress toward decarbonisation goals.

Dublin digital mapping and management of the kerbside

In Dublin, CurbIQ implemented a comprehensive digital mapping and management system for the city's bye-laws (the equivalent of UK’s TROs). This project involved creating a detailed digital map of the city's kerbside, including parking spaces, loading zones, and other critical infrastructure. By digitising these policies and assets, Dublin can now manage its kerbside more efficiently, optimising space allocation and improving accessibility. This project has not only streamlined kerbside management but also provided valuable data for future urban planning and development.

West Hollywood intelligent 'curb' management system

West Hollywood (WeHo) has taken a proactive approach to “curb” management (curb being the American spelling of kerb) to digitise and optimise their kerbside space. Using CurbIQ, WeHo has implemented an intelligent system that leverages real-time data from various parking operators and advanced analytics. CurbIQ allows for a centralised and dynamic management of parking, permits, loading zones, and other kerbside activity across city departments, resulting in enhanced efficiency in municipal processes.
