Car and the City provides transport, urban design, intelligent mobility, city management, parking, smarter travel and automotive professionals with a forum in which to explore and discuss how integrated urban mobility is evolving. We have a once in generation opportunity to transform our cities.

Car and the City will answer key questions:

• What are the possible futures for improved car-based urban mobility?
• Can we liberate the vast spaces required to move and to park cars?
• What needs to change to ensure that smart, connected and shared cars provide real civic benefit?
• How can city leadership positively shape future mobility for work, living and leisure?
• How should we plan as the model mix on our roads changes?
• Should changes be market or policy driven?
• What does the roadmap for change look like, and who is making key decisions?

In most cities and towns, car journeys top the modal split, and are often regarded by critics as wasteful, inefficient and selfish. But the automobile is a highly adaptive mode, and its role in the future – the very near future – could be significantly different. In future, can there be a socially and environmentally friendly role for automobiles?

New technologies connecting drivers, passengers, vehicles and infrastructure are being introduced to our cars, streets, roads and cities at an ever-quickening pace. Within five years, industry experts and government agree, such technologies will be widely used. Could they make car travel a more sustainable, efficient and acceptable element of integrated urban mobility?

This agenda setting event will explore themes such as:

• integration across the network between the car other modes and public transport
• intelligent vehicles: 'in-car' and 'between-car' smartness
• is the future one of private or shared vehicles?
• the emerging regulatory framework for cars
• ITS and UTMS - the link between cars and cities
• autonomous self-driving vehicles and their impacts on mobility patterns
• new vehicle technologies - clean engines, in-car information and guidance, automotive apps etc.
• maximising efficient use of cars - ensuring they spend less time parked and idle
• cars and parking as a land-use issue
• the environmental, health and wellbeing challenges of vehicle use (air quality and inactivity)
• emerging economic models for vehicle use: Vehicles-as-a-Service (VaaS), sharing economy, collaborative consumption, cloud commuting etc.
