The Department for Transport (DfT) has recently legalised rental e-scooter trials following a consultation as part of its Future of Transport programme. The consultation focused on 'defining an e-scooter, its maximum speed and power, and setting the rules that users must follow in the trials'.
DfT fast-tracked its e-scooter pilots in response to the COVID crisis, allowing the trials to commence more rapidly and in more areas than initially planned.
Initially, four Future Transport Zones were chosen for the trials - the West Midlands; Portsmouth and Southampton; the West of England Combined Authority (Bristol, Bath and surrounding areas); and Derby and Nottingham. But post COVID, 'more than 50 areas across Great Britain have expressed an interest in running e-scooter trials,' says the DfT.
