With the capacity of public transport heavily constrained post lockdown, many schools will face severe transport challenges come September, when the Government has requested that all children return to the classroom.
Across the UK, local authorities are making headway with the delivery of School Street schemes, which tackle air pollution, poor health and road danger reduction using temporary restrictions on private motorised school and through traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. But will a lack of safe public transport see a return to the traditional school run come the autumn?
Or, if we plan ahead now, can we lock in traffic-free streets, active travel to school choices and safer shared transport services?
