The Environment Bill is currently moving through Parliament, and is shortly to move the Report stage.
The Bill's stated aims are to:
build a fairer, greener, more resilient future
create a new and ambitious domestic framework for environmental governance
provide commitments to secure improvement on air quality, natural environment and biodiversity, water and resource efficiency
Active travel – non-motorised forms of transport involving walking, cycling and scooting, plus longer trips that include walking or cycling components – brings many obvious benefits to the environment and is a vital component of the transport decarbonisation solution.
Active travel is:
an essential element of the transition to a net-zero carbon economy, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, replacing vehicle traffic and improving air quality
a generator of health, economic, and social benefits
a contributor to economic performance by boosting the green recovery and creating a robust active travel economy
