Active City Leicester 2024, presented by Landor LINKS, sponsored by Active Travel England and hosted by Leicester City Council, is the UK's most popular networking event for active travel professionals.
For 2024, the city of Leicester will welcome more than 400 delegates to explore the walking, cycling and wheeling opportunities created by wide-ranging changes in mobility, social, environmental and economic trends.
Department for Transport executive agency Active Travel England has set specific objectives for active travel, which are to:
increase the percentage of short journeys in towns and cities that are walked or cycled to 46% in 2025, 50% in 2030 and 55% in 2035;
increase walking activity to 365 stages per person per year in 2025;
double cycling from 0.8 billion stages in 2013 to 1.6 billion stages in 2025; and;
increase the percentage of children aged 5 to 10 who usually walk to school from 49% in 2014 to 55% in 2025.
As well as approving and inspecting schemes to enable active travel, Active Travel England are supporting local authorities, training staff and spreading good practice in design, implementation and public engagement.
Active Travel England is a statutory consultee on major planning applications to ensure that the largest new developments properly cater for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
In 2023, Leicester City Council was rated by Active Travel England as one the highest performing local authorities in the first ever Government review of active travel infrastructure and support. Leicester is one of just five local authorities outside of London to achieve a 3 rating, putting it among the top performing English councils.
The first attendee from every Local Authority has been generously subsidised by the hosts and sponsors.
