HS2 cash should fund buses, says Guardian, as Mirror warns of huge cuts

The nation’s most used form of public transport, the humble bus, enjoyed some rare time in the media’s spotlight in early February, in part because of dire warnings that the network could be cut back by half. Rik Thomas reports

On 3 Februay The Guardian’s economics editor, Larry Elliott, indirectly criticised the Government’s planned HS2 high-speed rail project by suggesting that the money earmarked for the scheme could be far more productively spent improving the country’s bus infrastructure.

“Britain has a productivity problem,” he began. “And a lot of it has to do with buses. Public transport really matters.”
