With all the gung-ho talk about stripping rail operators of their franchises and handing them back to state running, there are a number of key questions that need to be asked. Yes, some of the problems are down to operators but as taxpayers picking up the bill we have a right to know how the state-run parts of our railway – the DfT, Network Rail and the likes of LNER are performing their duties and risking our money.
