Last November Kent became the latest of the Home Counties to open a traffic management centre (TMC) dedicated to the job of keeping the county's road network as free from congestion as possible. The new TMC contains two giant flat screens that track where the jams are building up, linked to a computer-based system that will log traffic levels, alter traffic light timings and give advance travel information online.
