North East transport leaders have received a £400m boost with the DfT's decision to provisionally approve a £300m plan to revitalise the Tyne and Wear Metro and a £98m plan to build a new crossing of the River Wear in Sunderland.
The £291m-?346m ten-year funding package for phase 2 of the Metro project will pay for work including station upgrades and refurbishment of rolling stock.
