Plaudits and brickbats for plans

Responding to the Government’s plans, shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said Labour was playing catch-up with the Conservatives who had led the way on high-speed rail. “We are not prepared to blindly accept the route that Labour propose,” she said, adding that a Tory Government would start building a high-speed line in 2015 – two years earlier than Labour.

Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Norman Baker was more positive, saying HS2 deserved congratulations...
