Investing in high-speed rail would represent a major misuse of scarce public expenditure, opponents of the Government’s plans told MPs this week.

Tory peer Lord Wolfson, the chief executive of Next, told the House of Commons transport committee inquiry into high-speed rail that many road improvements would deliver much better value for money than the plans for a high-speed rail network from London to the West Midlands, Manchester and Leeds.
