Engineers haven’t saved lives? Don’t be ridiculous

I refer to Ben Hamilton-Baillie’s rather contradictory letter about road safety in your last issue.

Mr Hamilton-Baillie does road safety engineering (and, therefore, road users’ safety) a great disservice by stating that “all the safety measures, such as … highway design … make negligible impact on the remorseless decline in fatalities over time”.

This is arrant nonsense, as shown by time series analysis of casualty costs for five fatal accident blacksites...
