Exceeding a road’s design speed is not inherently unsafe

David Cummins claims that posted speed limits correspond with the design speeds of roads, so exceeding a speed limit is inherently unsafe (Letters LTT 16 Dec). Even if so many local authorities were not arbitrarily reducing speed limits below the design speed, the latter is not a good indicator of a maximum safe speed under normal weather and traffic conditions.

The design speed determines certain geometric criteria for a road alignment, such as minimum curve radii and stopping sight distances....
