Value for money of London-West Midlands route drops by 40% in two years

The economic case for constructing the London to West Midlands high-speed line has fallen 40% since the plan was first unveiled two years ago, according to the Government’s own figures.

When the Labour Government unveiled the London-West Midlands route in March 2010, it had a benefit:cost ratio of 2.4:1. By the time the coalition Government launched the consultation on the detailed route last March, the benefit:cost ratio had fallen to 1.6:1.
