DfT’s narrow rationale for HS2 could weaken public support

Whilst the DfT is right to state that the “primary objective” of HS2 is to increase rail capacity (‘HS2 isn’t about reducing CO2 or the North-South divide, says DfT’ LTT 19 Jan), its dismissal of the political value of the other potential benefits of high-speed rail demonstrates a dangerous remoteness from public opinion.

It is the support of public opinion on the back of effective lobbying that resulted in the ‘Roads for Prosperity’ road-building...
