Advocates of 85th percentile speed limits have flawed logic

I would like to comment on the expressed opinions of Mr Walker and Mr Heymer about setting speed limits (Letters LTT 07 Feb).

Both gentlemen believe that the 85th percentile speed is the correct way of determining the speed limit for a given road. I agree, but with reservations. Mr Walker appears to believe that the 85% percentile speed is used to criminalise 15% of the public. It isn’t but rather, like a public skating rink, once enough people are doing something, everybody else fits...
