A former Labour minister has claimed that the Government has only firmly committed £6.4m to improving northern transport links.
As the General Election formally kicks off with the dissolution of Parliament, Nick Brown said ministers had only allocated £6.4m to making its Northern Transport Strategy a reality. "Northern cities should be wary of falling for the Government's pre-election charm offensive. Most of the new announcements are vague commitments for the future," he told the Newcastle Chronicle.
The Chancellor has said he wants proposals in the strategy to reduce journey times between northern cities to be developed so that they can be delivered in Network Rail's 2019 to 2024 control period. But Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has said that the cuts the Conservatives want to deliver if they govern on their own would undermine future investment in rail and road networks.
