HS2 – the line speed’s too fast, the trains are too long

Graham Nalty, Keith Rogers and Tony Bolden make very valid criticisms of the official proposals for HS2 (LTT 13 and 27 May). I should like to elaborate on some of them.

Top speed – 400kph is faster than used in France. The radius of curve required for the track varies with the square of the speed, as does wind resistance and hence energy required. The higher the top speed the higher the gearing required, which gives lower acceleration. Hence, for any spacing of stops there is an optimum...
