Scrap HS2: the NHS and classic rail need the cash

In the latest scene of the pantomime that is HS2, the Government is going to invite tenders for 60 1,000-seat 225mph trains. These fearsome beasts will be whatever the electric equivalent of a gas guzzler is. Green travel it ain’t. The transport secretary says the new line will carry 300,000 passengers a day, which, assuming every train is full, would mean a train in each direction every 7.5 minutes of the operating day (6am-midnight).
