Distance-based road charge collected by insurers wins £250,000 prize

A 27-year-old graduate transport planner has won this year’s Wolfson Economics Prize with a plan to replace fuel duty and vehicle excise duty with a distance-based charge collected by insurance companies

The Wolfson Economics Prize is billed as the most significant economics prize after the Nobel Prize and the £250,000 prize money is certainly not to be sniffed at. So there was huge interest in transport circles last year when prize sponsor, Lord Wolfson of Apsley, announced that the question for 2017 would be: ‘How can we pay for better, safer, more reliable roads in a way that is fair to road users and good for the economy and the environment?’
