City plans 15mph limits to show active travel rules the Square Mile

With a first-class public transport system, high pedestrian footfall, and lots of cycle trips, it’s perhaps not a surprise that London’s Square Mile should be the setting for an ambitious programme to further reduce the impact of motorised traffic. If you thought the debate about the appropriate speed limit for urban areas was between 30mph and 20mph, then think again: the City of London Corporation wants the speed limit on all of its roads cut to 15mph. The proposal is one of many eye-catching aspects of a new transport strategy to give pedestrians and cyclists more priority. The strategy also sets a 25 per cent traffic reduction target by 2030 as a “minimum aspiration”.
