Planning rules offer no protection for Art Deco car park, says council

Newcastle city centre’s historic Dex Garage will be demolished as part of plans for the redevelopment of Pilgrim Street. Newcastle City Council has said the loss of the Art Deco structure would be “regrettable” but it is powerless to protect the building.

The structure on New Bridge Street was the first purpose-built public multi-storey car park in the region when it opened in 1931.
