A half-hourly service now runs on the 18-mile route between Ashington and Newcastle
 

Passenger trains are back in service on the Northumberland Line between Ashington and Newcastle for the first time in 60 years. The £298.5m project has seen upgrades to the track, which in recent years has been used only by freight trains. New signalling has been installed and six stations have opened on the line.

Passenger services were withdrawn from the more northerly section of the network (serving Blyth, Bedlington, Ashington and Newbiggin) in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts.
