The Department for Transport has backed plans to upgrade the Swindon-Kemble rail line despite funding for the £40m project being rejected by the Office of Rail Regulation.

Transport minister Andrew Adonis has given his personal backing to the scheme after meeting with West of England MPs and rail lobby groups, and has announced £2.5m of funding for a study into double tracking the 12-mile stretch of track.
