Six longer trams have been ordered for Croydon to allow a more frequent service on the busiest parts of the network. The trams are 32 metres long, making them 2.5m longer than existing vehicles, and are air-conditioned and low-floor to allow better access.

The Variobahn model trams, to be built in Germany by Stadler, are each made up of five sections with wide gangways giving them a more spacious interior.

To accommodate the longer vehicles, tramstops and the depot will be modified.
