A higher speed limit will reduce motorway capacity

The last issue laid out various arguments for and against the 80mph speed limit on motorways. I realise that the point below may not apply on congested or empty motorways and that it is more complex but hopefully this issue will be considered in the debate.

The safe distance between cars travelling at 112kph (70mph) is 96 metres and at 128kph (80mph) it is 120 metres. Lane three of a kilometre of motorway would hold 10.4 cars in a ‘safe’ convoy travelling at 70mph but only 8.3 cars...
