Rail proponents’ numbers simply don’t add up

Readers will dismiss Norman Bradbury’s and Ed Gibbon’s critique (Letters LTT 17 Aug) of my letter of 3 August upon appreciating that these gentlemen insist on really silly comparisons. For example, both of them compare rail’s loadings with that of the entire road network, 87% of which is made up of back streets, B-roads and unclassified country lanes. That network has a length of 394,000km. In comparison, the national rail system has a right-of-way length of circa 16,000km and...
