Dartford Crossing toll rises will fuel social exclusion

Whilst reading transport minister Mike Penning’s 22 May statement on revising the charging regime at the Dartford-Thurrock river crossing, my focus was drawn to the suggestion that a proposed charge increase (to £2.50 for cars by October 2014) was “part of a strategy to ... manage demand at the crossing” in the future.

Road charging schemes such as the congestion charge in London can help to manage traffic flows and raise revenues for expenditure on infrastructure...
