Drivers evaded £46m of tolls on Dartford Crossings last year

Non-payment of electronic tolls at the Dartford Crossings cost taxpayers almost £46m in 2018/19, the DfT has revealed.

The loss is lower than in 2017/18 but the DfT explains that write-offs in 2017/18 were exceptionally high because they included a “legacy” of debts from soon after the electronic tolling system’s introduction.

Drivers at the Thames crossings between Dartford and Thurrock previously stopped at barriers to pay tolls, causing congestion.
