Desmond Fletcher, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive’s director general between 1976 and 1983 has died, aged 88. During his time as DG, Fletcher oversaw the delivery of the 42-mile Tyne and Wear Metro system, which opened in 1980.
He also oversaw the integration of PTE bus, Ferry and Metro and National Bus Company services to create what was widely regarded as the best integrated public transport network outside London, before bus deregulation in 1986.
