The North East Combined Authority wants to re-open an old railway south of Newcastle to ease capacity pressures on the East Coast Main Line that could worsen if HS2 services reach the city.

The Leamside line between Tursdale in County Durham and Pelaw in Gateshead was mothballed in 1991 and tracks were lifted in 2013. Previous campaigns to re-open the line have come to naught.
