Ministers should swallow their pride and redraw HS2 map

High-speed rail is an essential principle for the future of railways in the UK but it is burdened with seriously entrenched thinking.

The HS2 route through the Chilterns was designed on the premise of serving Heathrow Airport but this has since been recognised as non-essential. The route design north of Birmingham has been based on the Chiltern route being a given, but removing Heathrow must necessarily permit a better route choice throughout.
